El gaucho Martín Fierro

estudios de asia y áfrica, vol. 53, núm. 3 (167), 2018, pp. 697-716

A Google search that would combine the words "Martin" and "Fierro" in Arabic will refer us to what appears to be the only Arabic translation of the Martin Fierro, published in Cairo in 2016 (trans. by Abd al-Salam Basha). However, the first Arabic translation, almost unknown to the Arab world, was published 60 years before in Argentina. Carried out by the Syrian immigrant Yauad Nader, and published by the Syrian Cultural Association in Buenos Aires, this rare and limited edition circulated from hand to hand among Arab immigrants in Latin America. This article introduces Nader’s version of Jose Hernandez’ poem, and translates from Arabic to Spanish the edition’s paratext where Nader narrates his motives behind the translation, the methods he followed, and the literary decisions he had to make in order to create his version of the poem in modern Arabic.
